The Song Company 2024 Emerging Artist Program

The Song Company’s new Emerging Artist Program will build new professional pathways for emerging vocal talent through understudying, potential performance opportunities, and one-on-one skill development and mentoring with the artists of The Song Company.

The program has two areas of focus:

  • Emerging Artists: early career singers with demonstrated vocal training and experience in choral and/or ensemble singing
  • Apprentices: classical voice students enrolled in university or equivalent courses and recent graduates with an interest in singing in vocal ensembles

In 2024, the program's focus preparing the Emerging Artists as understudy's for The Song Company singers for each of the three main performance seasons.

The program launched with Superbloom in February 2024. 6 impressive young singers joined with The Song Company and Guest Director Jane Sheldon for two weeks of rehearsals and mentoring sessions.

The second program for year is The Stars Turn in June/July. This project was a wonderful opportunity to explore repertoire written and performed by The Song Company over the past 40 years.

Newsflash 14 June: Emerging Artist tenor Alex Gorbatov steps in for indisposed artist Timothy Reynolds for performances of The Stars Turn in Newcastle and Wollongong.

Newsflash 19 June: Emerging Artist soprano Annika Hinrichs steps in for indisposed artist Amy Moore in The Song Company's 40th Anniversary Gala Vespers for Mother Earth at City Recital Hall on 23 June.

The Apprentice Week will take place in Sydney 8–12 July 2024. 23 Singers from around Australia will be working with the artists of The Song Company and guest artists for a week's intensive rehearsals and workshops.

She has since excelled as a soloist, performing in acclaimed works including Handel's Messiah, Haydn's Creation and Orff's Carmina Burana. In addition to being a Song Company Emerging Artist for Superbloom and The Stars Turn, in 2024 Annika will sing three roles with Voxalis Opera in Brisbane: ‘Dew Fairy’ and ‘Sandman’ in Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, and ‘Pleasure’ in a staging of Handel's oratorio The Triumph of Time and Truth.

Eleanor Madonna Adeney, Alto & Violinist, is Co-Founder and Director of Brisbane’s professional choir, One Equal Music, and was formerly a chorister at St John’s Cathedral and St Stephen’s Cathedral before being recently appointed Director of Music at the Brisbane Oratory. Eleanor balances out her time spent singing in churches by regularly performing in session orchestras for festivals and popular artists such as Michael Bublé and Delta Goodrem.

Alex is an emerging lyric tenor, vocal ensemble singer, and director who specialises in the performance of very new and very old music. When Alex isn't directing Divisi Chamber Singers, you can find them singing up and down the East Coast with the Consort of Melbourne, Luminescence Chamber Singers, and most recently the Song Company Emerging Artist program. In 2024, Alex will complete their Honours degree in Vocal Performance at the University of Melbourne and hopes to continue to perform as both a soloist and ensemble professional. Alex is particularly passionate about creating opportunities that enable young musicians to perform and have their works performed. They work regularly with new composers and prioritize programming young Australian composers. When Alex isn't singing you can find them at the harpsichord, trying to write some code, climbing up plastic rocks, or attempting to catch a fish!

Jack Jordan is a Melbourne-based classical musician. He began his training with the Australian Boys Choir, to which he owes his dedication and love for music. Jack has performed across Victoria in opera, concert performances and recitals with some of the country’s premier organisations & companies. Bailey Montgomerie is an emerging performer, musical and artistic director, and a fierce advocate for the development of local Australian creative arts and artists. In his creative practice, Bailey prioritises the commissioning, development, and performance of new and innovative works. As co-director of Divisi Chamber Singers, he regularly commissions new creative works from emerging and under-represented composers, especially those from the LGBTQ+ community. He brings this passion into other contracts as a freelance conductor.

Bailey is also a practiced chamber musician and choral singer, having appeared with the Consort of Melbourne, Polyphonic Voices, Astra Chamber Choir, and, of course, with his own ensemble, Divisi.
