Philip Glass: Songs from Liquid Days
and other works
ARTISTS
Dan Walker Principal Artist – Tenor
Antony Pitts Artistic Director – Piano
Philip Glass’s iconic song-cycle from 1986 sets words by other songwriters – Paul Simon, Suzanne Vega, David Byrne, and Laurie Anderson – in his inimitable minimalist fashion, evoking both euphoria and stasis with warm harmonies and dynamic broken chords and basslines.
Singer, composer and all-round musician Dan Walker tackles this rarely-performed monument of contemporary culture in a series of live Close-Up appearances with Antony Pitts on keys, tapping into his own teenage roots as a keyboard-player in a rock band. Songs from Liquid Days has been described as Philip Glass’s “single greatest achievement” and is a cycle of meditations on the power of love, time, and change. Familiar from imitation in a thousand commercials and films, the sound of Glass’s insistent harmonic patterns are as visceral and affective today as when they were written.
