The Song Company 2022 Season

The Song Company’s 2022 Season, Higher Ground, aims to lift the spirit with exceptional ensemble singing by Australia’s elite national chamber vocal ensemble across a range of smaller- and larger-scale vocal music with a particular highlight on sacred polyphony from the 16th to 19th centuries.  Seeking refuge by moving ever higher is an instinct deep within the human psyche; we can discover shelter and meaning in the exquisite and intricate works of the polyphonic masters of the Renaissance, and as loved and imitated by later generations of composers such as Buxtehude and Brahms.

Our national MainStage series continues in force with two radical cutting-edge touring productions postponed from 2021 due to COVID lockdown, Arms of Love and Songs From The Heart, both featuring Indigenous creative artists in brand-new works.  To begin the season, another in our long-running series of sacred choral masterpieces, Ein deutsches Requiem by Johannes Brahms in a version for two pianos and voices joined by guest piano superstar Gerard Willems AM.

Our new NSW-based series of SongCo Underground picks up where we started in 2021 with Byrd Underground (given a 5-star review by Limelight “Celestial sounds from underground as The Song Company delivers an expert and enlightening performance in Tudor polyphony”) with a pan-European tour activating metropolitan spaces around Sydney and elsewhere in NSW, that begins with Josquin at the tail end of his 500th anniversary year and climaxes with Tallis and a return to his 40-part motet Spem in alium

These recent times have taught us all one thing perhaps – to be certain of nothing – yet the music of Josquin, Brumel, Lassus, Tallis, and their contemporaries is all about certainty – structure, tension and release, future glory in the face of current suffering.  At the same time we explore secular ideas of the “kingdom of heaven” and of transcending our boundaries in the music of minimalist master Philip Glass and Australia’s own Jessica O’Donoghue, and special Guest Artist, Paul Capsis.
