Biography
Elias Wilson is a Biripi man and emerging performer of opera, chamber music and oratorio. Elias has spent 2022 as an artist with Melba Opera Trust, supported by the Harold Blair Opera Scholarship for indigenous opera performers. In 2021 Elias debuted with Pinchgut Opera (Cavalli’s The Loves of Apollo & Dafne) and NIDA (Lysander in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream). Elias has previously appeared on the opera stage as La Rainette in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortileges (Sydney Conservatorium), as Satyavān in Gustav Holst’s Sāvitri (The Cooperative), and in his drag debut as Madame de la Haltière in Massenet’s Cendrillon (Sydney Conservatorium). In-demand as an oratorio soloist, Elias appears regularly as an artist with The Song Company, and as a soloist for the choir of St James King Street, Sydney. He has recorded for ABC Classic under the direction of Tamara-Anna Cislowska as part of Luminescence Chamber Singers, and has performed as a chamber singer in Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne under the batons of Roland Peelman, Antony Pitts, Paul Stanhope and Carl Crossin. Elias holds a Master of Music Studies (Opera Performance) and a Bachelor of Music Studies (Classical Voice) from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. During his studies Elias was supported by the Donald Lionel Egerton Scholarship, and the Helpmann Family Fellowship. While studying, a Vice Chancellor’s Mobility Scholarship enabled Elias to travel to Hangzhou, China, where he performed excerpts by Puccini and Bernstein in recital. In November, Elias will appear as Nemorino in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore for Pacific Opera, and in December he will perform the tenor solo in Handel’s Messiah in Darwin, NT, with Darwin Chorale under the direction of Brett Weymark OAM.
