Biography
Leonie Cambage began her career singing in the chorus of Opera Australia. While still singing with the company, she co-founded Three’s Company Opera, which commissioned and performed operas for children, and the children’s band Incy Wincy, which toured and recorded for many years with for ABC for Kids. Leonie has since established a reputation as a director of richly inventive, robust productions for community, fringe, and professional companies. A love of baroque opera has seen her direct opera and concerts for the ensembles Tall Poppeas and Ondine Productions, and in 2016, a triple bill of early opera reviewed as the ‘grand highlight’ of the Canberra International Music Festival. In June 2018, she was Assistant Director for Pinchgut Opera’s production of Athalia. For The Song Company, Leonie has collaborated with Anna Fraser and visual artist Benja Harney on Berio’s Sequenza III for Vocal Fireworks in 2014, and directed the premiere of Daniel Manera’s chamber opera L’Operetta II in 2015. Last year, she directed the semi-staged concert Machaut’s True-Love-Story. Leonie is delighted to be returning this year to direct the Company’s Australian premiere of Antony Pitts’s chamber opera Mind Over Matter. Other directing credits include Postman Pat (Childsplay Productions), Sweet Charity (Opera West), Shifting Positions (ScOPE), The Boat (Sherbrook Productions), HMS Pinafore and Trial by Jury (Babirra Music Theatre), Luisa Miller (Melbourne City Opera), Iolanthe (Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Victoria), Assistant Director of Faust (Melbourne Opera), Love’s Luggage Lost (Melbourne Opera Studio), Sally Whitwell’s cabaret Ten Tiny Dancers (Once Upon a Time program - Melbourne Spiegeltent), Into the Woods (Chatswood Musical Society), and Sally Whitwell and Emma Grey’s musical Unrequited, for the Grassroots Initiative in Melbourne.
